A Message from Dr. Michael Lange, Formulator of Fortifeye Macular Defense

Why Macular Defense with Zinc Is Essential for Some Individuals

As the formulator of Fortifeye Macular Defense, I designed this formula to support individuals who require zinc for optimal macular and retinal health. While modern science clearly shows that zinc is not appropriate for everyone, it also confirms that zinc remains a critical, vision-supporting mineral for specific populations.

Zinc plays an essential role in:

  • Retinal antioxidant defense
  • Vitamin A transport and metabolism
  • Immune function within ocular tissues
  • Protection against oxidative stress at the level of the macula

For the right individual, zinc can be protective and necessary.

When Macular Defense WITH Zinc Is the Right Choice

If genetic testing (DNA/SNP analysis) demonstrates a higher zinc requirement, normal zinc transport, or increased oxidative stress that responds favorably to zinc, then Macular Defense with zinc is the correct formula.

However, when genetic testing has not been performed, I rely on a practical, evidence-based clinical screening.

My Clinical Criteria for Recommending Zinc-Containing Macular Defense

I generally recommend Fortifeye® Macular Defense with zinc if any of the following apply:

  1. You follow a vegan diet
Zinc from plant foods is poorly absorbed due to phytates, placing vegans at higher risk of deficiency.
  2. You take a diuretic medication
Diuretics increase urinary zinc loss and frequently lead to subclinical deficiency.
  3. You consume more than one alcoholic drink per night
Alcohol interferes with zinc absorption, storage, and utilization.
  4. You have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
These conditions significantly impair zinc absorption and increase requirements.

If you answer YES to any of these, Macular Defense with zinc is typically the better choice.

Why Zinc Matters for These Individuals

In the populations listed above, zinc deficiency can accelerate retinal oxidative stress, compromise immune defense in the eye, and impair nutrient transport to photoreceptors and the macula. In these cases, removing zinc may do more harm than good.

That is why Fortifeye® Macular Defense includes carefully selected zinc levels, balanced with carotenoids, polyphenols, and antioxidants to support the macula without excess.

Precision, Not Guesswork

At Fortifeye, we do not believe in blanket supplementation. Zinc is powerful—but conditional. When it is needed, it should be included. When it is not, it should be avoided.

That is why I formulated both:

  • Fortifeye Macular Defense (with zinc)
  • Fortifeye Zinc-Free Macular Defense

So you and your doctor can choose the formula that best matches your biology, lifestyle, and risk factors.

Fortifeye Next Gen Macular Defense is designed for individuals seeking a proactive, scientifically grounded approach to preserving vision and overall health. By addressing individual variability in zinc needs and delivering precise nutrient ratios, this formula moves beyond traditional one-size-fits-all eye vitamins. Its comprehensive blend supports the macula, retina, brain, and entire body while aligning with the latest advancements in nutritional science. Backed by doctor leadership, clinical experience, and continuous refinement, Fortifeye® Next Gen Macular Defense represents an evolution in eye nutrition—built to adapt as science advances.

Next-Generation Nutrition for Vision, Longevity & Confidence

What is in Fortifeye Next Gen Macular Defense Capsules

Macu-LZ™ (Lutein, Zeaxanthin & Meso-Zeaxanthin Isomers) – 24 mg

Macu-LZ™ provides a clinically relevant combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, the three carotenoids that selectively concentrate in the macula and collectively determine macular pigment optical density (MPOD). These macular pigments filter high-energy blue light, reduce photo-oxidative stress, and support the structural and functional integrity of the macula.

A growing body of clinical and epidemiologic research demonstrates that higher MPOD levels are associated with improved visual performance, enhanced contrast sensitivity, and a lower risk of progressive age-related macular degeneration. Supplementation with these carotenoids has been shown to increase MPOD, supporting long-term macular and retinal health.

Astaxanthin (AstaReal®) – 2 mg

Astaxanthin is a powerful carotenoid antioxidant that crosses the blood-retinal barrier and helps reduce oxidative stress and inflammation within ocular tissues. It supports retinal and ocular health by neutralizing free radicals, stabilizing mitochondrial membranes, and down-regulating inflammatory pathways that contribute to visual fatigue and retinal stress. Clinical research shows astaxanthin may help improve ocular blood flow, reduce eye strain associated with prolonged digital device use, and support overall retinal resilience by creating a healthier oxidative and inflammatory environment within the eye.

Saffron Extract (Crocus sativus) – 20 mg

Saffron extract contains the bioactive carotenoids crocin and crocetin, which have demonstrated neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects within retinal tissues. Clinical studies suggest saffron supplementation may support retinal function, visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity, particularly in individuals with early age-related macular changes. Its mechanisms include reduction of oxidative stress, modulation of inflammatory pathways, and support of photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelial cell function, contributing to overall retinal resilience.

Curcuminoids (95% standardized extract) – 50 mg

curcuminoids are bioactive polyphenols derived from turmeric with well-documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In ocular tissues, curcuminoids help modulate key inflammatory signaling pathways, including NF-κB, and reduce oxidative stress that contributes to both anterior and posterior segment inflammation. Clinical and preclinical evidence suggests curcuminoids may support retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) health and help influence the inflammatory and oxidative processes involved in drusen formation, with emerging research indicating a potential role in reducing drusen burden or size over time.

In addition, curcuminoids have been shown to support a healthier inflammatory balance in conditions involving ocular surface and intraocular inflammation, making them beneficial for individuals with dry eye disease and uveitis, where chronic inflammation plays a central role. By supporting inflammatory control across multiple ocular tissues, curcuminoids contribute to overall retinal resilience, ocular comfort, and long-term visual health

Resveratrol (standardized extract) – 100 mg

Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound with well-documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular-protective properties that support retinal and overall ocular health. In retinal tissues, resveratrol helps reduce oxidative stress, modulate inflammatory signaling pathways, and support mitochondrial function within retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and retinal neurons. Preclinical and emerging clinical research suggests resveratrol may help regulate abnormal angiogenic signaling, support healthy retinal blood flow, and protect retinal cells from oxidative and inflammatory stressors associated with aging and metabolic dysfunction. Through these mechanisms, resveratrol contributes to retinal resilience and long-term visual health.

B-Complex Vitamins (with Methylated Folate, Vitamin B6 & Vitamin B12)

B-complex vitamins play a critical role in retinal vascular health, optic nerve function, and cellular metabolism. Of particular importance to macular and retinal health are vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin B12, which work synergistically to regulate homocysteine metabolism. Elevated homocysteine levels have been associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and increased risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Large prospective and interventional studies have demonstrated that maintaining healthy homocysteine levels through adequate intake of B6, folate, and B12 is associated with a reduced risk of progressive macular degeneration and retinal vascular disease. Using methylated forms of folate (5-MTHF) and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) ensures optimal bioavailability, particularly in individuals with common genetic variations that impair folic acid metabolism.

Beyond homocysteine regulation, B-complex vitamins support mitochondrial energy production, optic nerve integrity, and normal neurotransmitter function, contributing to long-term retinal resilience and overall ocular health.

Mitochondrial Support Complex (Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Alpha-Lipoic Acid & Coenzyme Q10)

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

Acetyl-L-carnitine supports mitochondrial energy production and fatty acid transport within retinal neurons and retinal ganglion cells. It has demonstrated neuroprotective properties, helping support optic nerve and retinal cell metabolism under conditions of oxidative stress and aging. ALCAR plays a role in maintaining normal neuronal signaling and cellular energy balance, which are critical for long-term retinal and optic nerve health.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)

Alpha-lipoic acid is a unique antioxidant that functions in both water- and fat-soluble environments, allowing it to protect multiple retinal cell compartments. ALA helps reduce oxidative stress, regenerate endogenous antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and support mitochondrial function in retinal and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Clinical evidence supports its role in neurovascular protection, particularly in individuals with metabolic stress that may affect retinal health.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme Q10 is an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and is critical for cellular energy production in high-energy tissues such as the retina and optic nerve. CoQ10 helps protect retinal neurons from oxidative damage, supports mitochondrial stability, and contributes to neuroprotection of retinal ganglion cells, making it particularly relevant for aging-related retinal stress and glaucomatous risk.

Integrated retinal benefit

Together, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, and CoQ10 support mitochondrial efficiency, oxidative balance, and neuronal resilience within retinal tissues. This combination helps maintain energy production, protect retinal and optic nerve cells from oxidative and metabolic stress, and support long-term ocular health.

Retinal Microcirculation & Vascular Support Complex (Pine Bark Extract, Bilberry & Grape Seed Extract)

Pine Bark Extract (Pinus pinaster)

Pine bark extract is rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) that support endothelial function and microvascular circulation. In ocular tissues, pine bark extract has been shown to improve retinal and choroidal blood flow, reduce capillary permeability, and support nitric oxide–mediated vasodilation. Clinical research suggests benefits in conditions involving retinal vascular stress, including diabetic retinopathy and glaucomatous risk, where impaired microcirculation plays a central role.

Bilberry Extract (standardized for anthocyanins)

Bilberry extract provides anthocyanins that selectively support retinal capillary integrity and microvascular stability. These compounds enhance retinal blood flow, strengthen capillary walls, and support visual performance, particularly night vision and contrast sensitivity. Bilberry has also demonstrated antioxidant effects within the retina, helping protect photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells from oxidative stress related to light exposure and vascular insufficiency.

Grape Seed Extract (95% OPCs)

Grape seed extract is a highly concentrated source of proanthocyanidins that support vascular strength and permeability regulation within the retina. It helps protect retinal blood vessels from oxidative damage, supports collagen integrity in capillary walls, and reduces oxidative and inflammatory stress that can compromise retinal microvasculature. These properties make grape seed extract valuable for long-term retinal vascular health and macular support.

Integrated retinal benefit

Together, pine bark extract, bilberry, and grape seed extract support retinal blood flow, capillary integrity, and microvascular resilience. By improving circulation and reducing oxidative stress within retinal vessels, this combination contributes to enhanced retinal oxygenation, nutrient delivery, and long-term ocular health.

L-Taurine – 50 mg

Taurine is one of the most abundant amino acids in the retina and plays a critical role in maintaining photoreceptor integrity, retinal neuronal function, and cellular osmoregulation. It is essential for normal photoreceptor survival, and taurine deficiency has been shown in experimental models to result in progressive retinal degeneration.

In ocular tissues, taurine helps stabilize retinal cell membranes, regulate intracellular calcium, and reduce oxidative stress, thereby supporting the functional integrity of photoreceptors and retinal ganglion cells. Taurine also exhibits neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to retinal resilience under conditions of metabolic, light-induced, or age-related stress. Through these mechanisms, taurine supports long-term retinal health, visual function, and overall ocular integrity.

Antioxidant & Immune Support Vitamins (Vitamin C, Vitamin D3 & Vitamin E)

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is a primary water-soluble antioxidant in the eye and is found in high concentrations in the aqueous humor and retinal tissues. It plays an essential role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species generated by light exposure and metabolic activity within the retina. Vitamin C supports retinal capillary integrity, collagen synthesis, and endothelial function, making it particularly important for macular and retinal vascular health. Large clinical trials, including the AREDS studies, have demonstrated the importance of vitamin C as part of an antioxidant strategy to support long-term macular health and reduce the risk of progressive age-related macular degeneration.

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

Vitamin D3 functions as an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory nutrient with emerging importance in ocular health. Vitamin D receptors are present in retinal and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, and low vitamin D levels have been associated with increased risk of age-related macular degeneration, dry eye disease, and ocular inflammatory conditions. By supporting immune regulation and inflammatory balance, vitamin D3 contributes to retinal resilience, ocular surface comfort, and overall visual health.

Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols)

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects retinal cell membranes, which are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and particularly vulnerable to oxidative damage. It plays a critical role in preventing lipid peroxidation in photoreceptor outer segments and supports mitochondrial stability in retinal neurons. Vitamin E works synergistically with vitamin C to regenerate antioxidant capacity and has been shown in large clinical trials, including AREDS, to support long-term macular and retinal health.

Integrated ocular benefit

Together, vitamins C, D3, and E provide complementary antioxidant and immune support that helps protect retinal tissues from oxidative stress, support vascular and inflammatory balance, and promote long-term macular and ocular health.

Ocular Circulation & Metabolic Support (Black Currant & Chromium)

Black Currant (Ribes nigrum) Fruit Extract

Black currant is rich in anthocyanins that have demonstrated beneficial effects on ocular blood flow, retinal microcirculation, and visual comfort. These bioactive compounds support vascular tone, enhance nitric oxide–mediated circulation, and help reduce oxidative stress within ocular tissues. Clinical studies suggest black currant anthocyanins may improve eye fatigue, visual function, and accommodative performance, particularly in individuals exposed to prolonged digital device use. Black currant also supports tear film stability and ocular surface comfort, making it beneficial for individuals with dry eye symptoms related to inflammation and vascular insufficiency.

Chromium (as Chromium Nicotinate)

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that supports glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, which are critical for long-term retinal and vascular health. Dysregulated glucose metabolism contributes to oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and microvascular damage within the retina. By supporting healthy blood sugar regulation, chromium indirectly helps protect retinal microvasculature and reduce metabolic stress that may contribute to retinal and optic nerve dysfunction. Chromium nicotinate is a bioavailable form that supports metabolic balance without stimulating insulin spikes.

Integrated ocular benefit

Together, black currant and chromium support ocular circulation, visual comfort, and metabolic stability, helping protect retinal tissues from vascular and oxidative stress associated with digital eye strain, aging, and metabolic imbalance.

Zinc (as Zinc Monomethionine)

Zinc is an essential trace mineral with a critical role in retinal metabolism, photoreceptor function, and antioxidant defense. It is highly concentrated in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), where it supports enzymatic activity involved in visual signaling, oxidative stress control, and cellular repair. Zinc is also required for the hepatic mobilization and retinal transport of vitamin A, contributing to normal dark adaptation and night vision.

Large clinical trials, including the AREDS and AREDS2 studies, demonstrated that zinc plays an important role in supporting long-term macular health and was associated with a reduced risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration in select populations. Zinc monomethionine is a highly bioavailable, well-tolerated form that supports absorption while minimizing gastrointestinal irritation.

At the same time, emerging research suggests that individual genetic differences and metabolic factors may influence zinc requirements and tolerance. For this reason, zinc intake should be personalized, with zinc-containing formulations appropriate for individuals with increased needs, and zinc-free formulations suitable for those who may benefit from limiting supplemental zinc exposure.
